Above: Artists impression of a pool of ultra salty water on MarsIt seems that the speculation has been on the money for once: Today's NASA announcement is, if not utterly iron clad evidence, at least a convincing 'smoking gun' that some small amount of liquid water is present on Mars today. I'll give this the proper attention and write up it deserves when I've got time to go through the press release and background materials properly. For now I'll give you a quick snippet of the NASA release:New findings from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) provide the strongest evidence yet that liquid water flows intermittently on present-day Mars. Using an imaging spectrometer on MRO, researchers detected signatures of hydrated minerals on slopes where mysterious streaks are seen on the Red Planet. These darkish streaks appear to ebb and flow over time. They darken and appear to flow down steep slopes during warm seasons, and then fade in cooler seasons.
