Experiment with a vacuum pump
We JAXA have been strengthening collaboration with Sagamihara City as I described several times in this blog. On the course of the collaboration, Sagamihara City Office planned to visit our campus as this year’s recreation event for workers. In the afternoon of December 12, more than hundred people gathered in our campus. The lecture and facility tour was started with my one-hour talk, followed by facility tour of exhibition hall, M-V rocket exhibit and environmental test building, and experiments using a small vacuum chamber and space origami. The facility tour on that day was perfect, because they could see the flight model of Venus Climate Orbiter “Akatsuki” to be launched next year, the structure model of BepiColombo Mercury Magnetosphere Orbiter (MMO) to be launched in 2014, and the flight model of the world’s first solar sail craft “IKAROS” (Interplanetary Kite-craft Accelerated by Radiation Of the Sun) to be launched as one of the sub-payloads of “Akatsuki”.
