Amy Mainzer, Asteroid Hunter!: NASA’s NEOWISE spacecraft has returned its first images after coming back online. The mission began as WISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer), which finished in 2011. The spacecraft was then shut down. When NASA turned it back on, it was renamed NEOWISE and is now searching for near-earth-objects.

Amy Mainzer is the principal investigator for NEOWISE at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Mainzer has a wide range of interests, and studies everything from asteroids to brown dwarfs and planetary atmospheres. Her list of cool awards is just as long, and includes things like the JPL Ranger Award (2008 and 2011) and the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal in 2012.
