Board meeting of World Space Week Association
During my stay at the International Astronautical Congress 2009 in Daejeon, there was another important task to participate in the biannual meeting of Board of Directors of the World Space Week Association (WSWA) that I was newly assigned. What is “World Space Week”? It is a seven-day period starting from October 4 to 10, and was declared in the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, recognizing that October 4 is the day when the world first artificial satellite, Sputnik, was successfully launched in 1957, and that October 10 is the day when the Space Law was settled in 1967. It is celebrated under the guidance of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (OOSA), which Japanese ex-astronaut Takao Doi became its Head of UN Programme on Space Applications. World Space Week’s coordinated worldwide and nationwide activities will enhance their media coverage, and thus publicizing space activities.
